Talking about Bush orders gas price probe - Politics - MSNBC.com

I seem to find it very hard to beleive that Bush is really going to do anything about this. This happened a few months back and the oil companies simply lowered them temporarily and then hiked them back up again. There has to be an alternative to these high gas prices. The oil companies are making a bundle while most American's are struggling to pay for the gas they get at the pump. I have a Honda Civic. It used to cost about $10-$12 to fill up the tank. I am floating at about $30 now. I can't even imagine what its like to fill an SUV or some other large vehicle these days.

    New Year

2005 has come and gone and now we have entered a new year. 2005 brought me many unexpected experiences and life lessons. I can't say it was a great year but we made it through it healthy and safe and thats more than I could ask for. 2005 taught me to take care of my health as its the only thing I truly have. The year also taught me about love. September 23rd marked my one year anniversary. I couldn't beleive a year had passed. I have learned a lot about life and love this year, mostly that I still have so much more to learn.

I am done wtih 2005 and moving forwrd into a new year. My hope is that 2006 brings me love, peace and happiness to my life and to all those around me as well. I am not making any resolutions in 2006. I tend to break resolutions, so no sense in making them. I would rather make resolutions at the right time and not just because its a new year. This year will be a busy year, T's wedding, many trips, my 26th birthday, my 2nd wedding anniversary, and hopefully many new experiences along the way as I prepare for the next 25 years of my life.

So cheers to 2006...may you set the stage for the next quarter century of my life. To Love, Peace, and all of Gods blessings.

Talking about Bush takes blame for flaws in Katrina response - Hurricane Katrina - MSNBC.com

The first truthful thing to come out of this man's mouth. Unfortunetly too little, too late. I hope people realize that the presidents staff and image consultants were hard at work with this one.

George Bush Does not care about Black People

On Friday, September 2nd, NBC and its affiliates held a Hurricane Relief Concert. Kanye West went off script and stated a very heartfelt message about the current situation in the Gulf Coast and the goverments slow response. At the end of his statement, he stated "George Bush does not care about black people." I almost fell out my seat when I saw the replay. Mike Myers face was priceless. NBC cut back to host Chris Tucker immediately and he was almost speechless. He looked like he had no idea what to say and started babbling "please give...ahhh....we need your donations...ahhh..." LOL. Now not everyone will agree with what Kanye West stands for or what he speaks about in his music but quite a lot of people agree with his statement. If you missed it...here is the link.

    Hurricane Katrina

This has been one of the most horrific weeks in US and likely world history. Hurricane Katrina hit the Golf coast with a vengance 5 days ago. If that wasn't bad enough, the aid  that people needed didn't arrive till today and it wasn't even close to being enough. President Bush didn't arrive in the areas of need till today, again 5 days after the hurricane destroyed the Gulf Coast. New Orleans Mayor Nagin went off on the federal government's slow response to this disaster. This has likely been one of the biggest and most severe mistakes in US history. These people are hungry, sick, wet, and dehydrated and are just now getting some aid into one of the poorest places in the country. If this area had not been predominately black, aid would have been there long ago. I have been disgusted by this more and more each day. I have never been so disappointed to be an American than I am this week. May God be with all those that have been impacted by this tragedy.

    Bahamas

So I have just returned from the Bahamas. I really enjoyed my trip and had a wonderful time with my sorors as we attended out 2005 Leadership Conference. The Atlantis is a beautiful hotel and I definitely recommend it. There is something for everyone. There is Camp Discovery for the kids, casinos for the gamblers, a spa for those that want to be pampered and dinning and water activities for any age.

We meet many sorors from all over the US and abroad as well as quite a few locals. We had an interesting cab ride around Nassau for about 5 hours. Our guide was great and he showed us more than we could ever ask for. We also took a boat over to a Blue Lagoon island. Unfortunetly we started having thunderstorms so that made that journey a little shorter. Then we experienced a Bahamian cultural show with dancers and the Big Bambo. My sorors that were there will know what the Big Bambo is.  LOL

Overall, good trip and I would go back again. Now I am back to reality with work and attempting to take care of my hubby.

    Funerals & Death

So this past week I attended my third funeral in the last 4 months. Now I have gone years without having to attend a funeral and it seems that the beginning of 2005, has brought a few. I think I blogged about this back in late February when I returned from my one of my closest friends/soror mom's funeral. I have really been thinking a lot about funeral's, death, and such. I am sure this is probably not healthy but I am taking it in the case of people should make sure they have their house in order because you never know. Last week I went to one of the most beautiful homegoing celebrations. It was truly a celebration. I am a friend of the person who lost thier loved one and not a family member but I was absolutely brought to tears at how wonderful the celebration was and the type of life this very brave, charismatic, and classy woman had. I made a decision that I want a party/celebration when I pass. Funerals are often solomn occasions but this was absolutely not that at all. So I have decided to go back and change my will to outline how I want my homegoing celebration to be. I say all this to say, get your house in order because you never know when it will be your time and be specific. As the pastor stated at the funeral, you have to be ready because its not your plan but God's plan that is working.

    Missing - Point to Ponder

Another interesting read about missing people and the disparities between missing minorities and whites.

Not All Missing Persons Are Equal

    NEW YORK, June 17, 2005

(CBS) As the search continues for Natalee Holloway in Aruba, the family of another missing woman expresses frustration.

A year ago this week, a 24-year-old African-American woman named Tamika Huston of Spartanburg, S.C., was reported missing by her family. Most who know all about Holloway, probably haven't heard of Huston, although her family has tried everything it could to get national media attention.

According to FBI statistics, African-Americans and other minorities make up a larger portion of missing victims than the media represents. However, cases like Huston's often get little attention.

Huston's aunt, Rebkah Howard, who is a public relations professional, tried to develop national concern by having her family distribute fliers, hold a press conference, and create a Web site (check it out) to get mass media attention, but the story was primarily ignored.

As the search continues for Holloway, who is white, an article in USA Today June 16 asks why the media doesn't show more concern about missing blacks, Hispanics and other minorities. While no one is suggesting that the media ignore Holloway's story, critics point to a trend.

Howard tells The Early Show co-anchor Hannah Storm she doesn't believe executive producers and newsroom staff consciously exclude persons of color, but notes it is important for the media to take a critical look at which cases they cover.

"What I believe is happening," Howard says, "is that networks have found a formula that has worked for them. And they tend to be about young, white attractive, middle- to upper-class women. And they continue to follow those stories. As one is resolved, they'll move on to the next one. I was met with a lot of resistance when I tried to get national attention for this case. It has been unfortunate."

Just recall the stories of Jennifer Wilbanks, the missing bride, Laci Peterson and Lori Hacking, the missing pregnant wives, and Elizabeth Smart, the young woman from Salt Lake City. They were all white, young, attractive, middle-class, American women.

According to FBI statistics and USA Today, men are more likely than women to be reported missing, and blacks make up a disproportionately large segment of the victims. However, you wouldn't know that from watching television, listening to the radio or reading national newspapers.

Since May 1, FBI statistics indicate there were 25,389 men and 22,200 women listed as missing. Of the total of missing women since May 1, 8,681 were minorities (this includes Asian, African-American, American Indian and other minorities except Hispanics.) This compares to 13,519 white and Hispanic women. (It is not clear how many of those are Hispanic.)

"I would really hope that the media would just come to us and help us, says Huston's father, Anthony. "Getting national media coverage in the beginning, we really think that could have helped us out."

Howard notes the circumstances of her niece's disappearance from Spartanburg were very suspicious.

She explains, "We don't know exactly the date that Tamika was last seen, but we're estimating, based on the police investigation, it was between May 24 to the 26. In mid-June, her car was discovered at an apartment complex not too far from where she lived in a single-family home. A key that was left in her vehicle traced back to an apartment that was formerly lived in by an acquaintance of Tamika. They found blood in that apartment that matched Tamika's DNA and police continue to investigate at this point."

Tamika Huston's body has not been found.

Huston's family also expressed their sympathy for Natalee Holloway's family.

    Viva Las Vegas

So I took a trip to Vegas not that long ago and I have to say I had a good time. I am not one of those people that gets thrilled about going to Vegas, as I grew up going there. Whats interesting to me are two things. One: That in the past 15+ years that I have been going to Vegas, the overall look hasn't changed. Now there are a lot of developments, new hotels, etc. however, I walked pass one of the hotel gift shops and looked in the window. The same outfits with all the Las Vegas glitz and glamour that was there when I was 12, was still in the window. The same butts on the back of the taxis were still there and its still the home of the once upon a time former celebrity singers. The atmosphere and sheer uniqueness of the city is incredible and will never change. I hope it doesn't.

Two: There is an entirely different city outside of the strip that very few people knows exist. I have a close friend that lives there and she showed me around a bit. It looks like any other subruban city. Large shopping centers, Wal Marts, condos, single family homes, etc. Outside of the heat factor, it seems like a cool place to live. Check it out next time you are there.

    Blogging

I haven't written in such a long time. Life took over and other things like blogging fell through. I am going to make a better effort to post things that are interesting.

    Whats on my mind today...

    1) I am not going out on any island by myself and if my friends let me do that, they are not very good friends.

    2) MJ got off but he still needs some serious help.

    3) People are always going to have an opinion however, most are not willing to stand up and do anything about what they see as the problem. For example, people say our education system is horrible. My response would be what are you doing to help educate our youth? Are you writing your congressmen and other government officials (local, state, or federal) about the issue, are you volunteering with organizations such as Junior Achievement or tutoring kids at after school programs. Usually the answer to these questions and others like it are no.

    4) No matter how many vitamins one takes, there is no substitute for a good nights rest.

I think thats about it for now.

    The Pope

Last Saturday the Pope passed away. Now I am not Catholic but I have found this whole process quite interesting. Also, I never realized how many things this Pope had been apart of before and I find that, too, quite interesting.

Some people know that I have become very interested in death in general. I returned from one of my closest friend's moms funeral about 6 weeks ago. Since then, I took a lot of time writing out my living will and funeral wishes. Yes I am 24 years old and completed both of these. I think its never too early. In addition, I don't want my family to have to worry about such things at the time of my passing. Small things like color of flowers, who is in the processional, and which earrings I would like to be buried with, are all things that I dont wish for my family to have to deal with. For most people, the Terri Schaivo case brought this to more light for people. I pray that her husband and family can find peace between them, so that she can find peace in her final resting place as well. Interestingly enough after this whole case, I went back and revised my healthcare directives associated with my will and final testament. Then after the Pope passed away, I made special note of who I felt it was important to be there. This became apparant after former US President Jimmy Carter was left off the US delegation to the Pope's funeral.Although I understand Condelleza Rice's position and the prominence of the First Lady, I think one of the two of them should have given up their place so that President Carter could have attended. He was the only President to host this pope in the White House and they shared a special relationship. I'll be damned if the people that I would want could not be there because someone else who should have done the right thing and stepped back, didn't give up their spot. Funerals and weddings...nothing but politics.

But back to the Pope. The process for electing the next Pope is incredible. It sounds like one of the most traditional and sequenced process of events. Re: Potential

So my Potential entry has caused many people to email me or send me an IM about who pissed me off. To be perfectly honest no one pissed me off. People just find a way to urk me the wrong way. I think I would have just brushed it off if it was only one person but it was multiple people. So No I am not mad at anyone and my annoyance has passed. However, I still want people to think about their potential and what they want to make out of it. Someone very close to me knows exactly what they want to do in their life and I know they have all the potential in the world to do just that. They may not completly be there yet, however, they are making all the necessary steps to achieve what they are ultimately set out to do. I am very proud of that individual for seeing where they can truly go and aiming for that with an excredible gusto. It's not enough to know what you can do, its how you apply yourself to achieving that.

    Potential

Microsoft has a slogan "Realizing Your Potential". I personally think this is one of the best advertising campaigns ever, not only for the company but in general. It speaks to the company producing software and tools that help people truly realize their potential.

Now I am not going to say that I always do things at 100%. Sometimes certain things do not warrant that much effort or time. However, I do know what my own capabilitites are and where I face challenges. With that said, is it too much to ask that others realize their own potential??? Is it too much to ask for people to look inside themselves for what they are capable of before turning to someone for them to do it? Is it too much to ask that people challenge their own thinking and that of others before dismissing the endless possibilities?

These are questions that have been plaguing me over the last couple of days. I find that most people look to accomplish the minimum and not look at what is truly possibly. I am surrounded by very bright, intelligent, hard working and capable people. However, I find that some dismiss an idea or a suggestion because they feel that they dont want to apply themself or they dont like the idea. Instead of looking to the other contributors talents and gifts to see if this is something that is possible. This bugs me. I have some very talented individuals around me that are not being challenged, at times I am one of those people. Now some of this requires individuals stepping up and accepting the challenge, while other times there are others holding them down or never seeking their input and constantly going to the same people over and over and over again to get something accomplished.

My final thought on this....Step Up and Start Realizing Your Potentail! If it means using an excel sheet to track metrics or data, do it. If it means, looking towards others that are rarely called on to serve to participate, shout them out! If it means choosing the high road and not the petty one, take that path! If it means making an executive decision when you are capable of doing so, make that call!  Bottom line...step out and see the endless possibilities of what you can do and challenge those around you to do the same.
